During the design and commissioning phase, everything seemed right. The sensor type was selected according to the datasheet, process conditions were within specification, and installation followed the manufacturer's guidelines. Box checked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Then, little by little, it became less reliable.\nUnexplained jumps. Values that were just<em><strong> slightly <\/strong><\/em> off. And that nagging feeling that this wasn't simply a settings issue.<\/p>\n<p>And then... Slowly, it stopped working. Then suddenly, it stopped altogether and threw a fault.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Theory says: this should work<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As engineers, our instinct is to go back to the theory.\nRadar is robust. It's not affected by density. Not by pressure. Hardly by temperature. It's the ideal solution for challenging processes. At least, that's what the literature says.<\/p>\n<p>So my first reaction was exactly what you'd expect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the settings<\/li>\n<li>Reassess the installation.<\/li>\n<li>Inspect for contamination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Everything was according to the book.\nAnd yet, the measurement kept misbehaving.\nThat's the moment when your engineering ego quietly starts to protest. Because you should be able to explain <em>this <\/em>. The theory is clear. The datasheet is clear.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What the field was telling us<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>On the plant floor, I heard things that weren't written in any manual:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt gets worse the longer it runs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen fouling builds up, it seems to become blind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe product behaves differently now than it did during commissioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>No graphs. No equations. Just observations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Want radar mag dan ongevoelig zijn voor veel parameters, <strong>hij is niet ongevoelig voor alles<\/strong>.<br>Niet voor:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Build-up and fouling<\/li>\n<li>Changing surface conditions<\/li>\n<li>Vapours<\/li>\n<li>Condensation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What starts out clean, smooth, and predictable during commissioning can become complex, messy, and dynamic in real production.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The vendor proposed an alternative solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The supplier suggested switching to an HF radar.Higher frequency. Shorter wavelength. Better separation of complex echoes.\nIn theory, more sensitive...In practice? More stable for this specific process.<\/p>\n<p>My first reaction? Doubt.<\/p>\n<p>Because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><em><strong>Why<\/strong><\/em>  did the original radar work at first?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Is this <em><strong>geenreally the right solution,<\/strong> <\/em> or just a commercial one?<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Have we actually  <em><strong>understood the root cause<\/strong><\/em>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">And this is an important point, especially for women in engineering:  <strong><em>Doubting yourself doesn't mean you're weak. It means you're being thorough.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How I approached it (and what I learned)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I stopped asking, \"Which radar is better?\" and started asking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What has changed in the process over time?<\/strong><br \/>Not just temperature and pressure, but fouling, residue, and surface conditions.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>What is the radar actually seeing?<\/strong><br>Not the level itself, but echoes. Reflections. Scattering. Noise<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where is the theory too simplistic for this reality?<\/strong><br \/>Datasheets assume ideal conditions.<\/li>\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>What is the risk of continuing versus adapting?<\/strong><br>A poor measurement isn't a minor issue. It affects safety, availability, and trust in the process.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That's when it finally clicked: <em>niet fout gekozen<\/em>.<br \/>The original radar wasn't selected incorrectly.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A lesson for female engineers (and actually everyone)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Many of us are good at understanding the theory. Building a solid case. Wanting to fully understand a problem before making a change. That's a strength. But the field teaches you something else:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You don't always have to be right.<\/li>\n<li>You have to make sure it works.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And sometimes that means accepting that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The design was correct<\/li>\n<li>The theory was correct<\/li>\n<li>Yet reality turned out differently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That's not failure. That's engineering.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final thought<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">To the women in engineering who recognize this:<br>You don't prove your expertise by holding on to a decision..<br>You prove your value by leaving the process better than you found it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">The radar that stopped working taught me this:<br>Theory is the starting point.<br>Practice is the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Can you relate!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>When was the first time reality challenged something that looked perfect on paper?<\/strong><\/h3>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It worked.\n\nFor months.\n\nThe radar delivered stable measurements, no strange spikes, no dropouts.
